Giving a Librela Injection At Home
Giving a Librela Injection At Home
Librela must be kept in the refrigerator at all times until time of treatment. A clean, sterile syringe and needle must be used for each treatment. Follow these steps when drawing up and injecting:
1. Ensure correct vial of Librela (based on weight)
2. Pull needle cover away from syringe
3. Insert needle straight into the vial
4. Turn vial upside-down
5. Draw back on plunger and collect all liquid from the vial, then remove needle and put cover back on.
6. Draw back on the syringe to pull the liquid out of the needle, then switch to a fresh needle. With the new needle on, push the liquid back up into the needle to ensure there is no air in the syringe when going to inject. A fresh needle that has not gone through the vial is sharper and therefore more comfortable and smooth for your pet than a dull needle.
7. Hold syringe in dominant, then with the other hand grab skin along their back to make a "tent"
8. Push needle through skin fairly quickly at the base of your tent; at a 30 degree angle; make sure needle is through one layer of skin only and not into the muscle or through both layers of skin. You are injecting subcutaneously (under the skin).
9. Pull back gently on the plunger to make sure there is no blood in the syringe; if you do see blood, pull needle out and start again with a fresh syringe and new Librela dose.
10. Push plunger all the way to inject the liquid subcutaneously (under the skin).
11. Withdraw the needle from your pet's skin. Replace needle cover by having the cover on the table, then slide the needle into it and push the cover on using the wall or the table. Avoid using your fingers to avoid pricking yourself. Put needle into a sharps container or glass jar. Used needles can be disposed of at any pharmacy.
12. Reward your pet, pat him/her and give a treat. This can be repeated every 30 days, or as directed by the veterinarian. Contact us to report any adverse effects.
